
Saving seed is the quiet superpower of gardening. Do it once and you’ll never again buy lettuce seed. Do it for a decade and you’ll have strains adapted to your exact soil, your weather, your taste — a variety that exists nowhere else on earth.
It’s also easier than the mystique suggests. Here’s the whole practice in one guide.
Step 0: Start with the right seed
You can only save seed that comes true — and that means open-pollinated or heirloom varieties. Seed saved from F1 hybrids grows into unpredictable second-generation plants. Check your packet: if it says “F1” or “hybrid,” enjoy the harvest but buy the seed again. Everything in our catalog is open-pollinated for exactly this reason.
The three difficulty tiers
Some plants practically save their own seed. Others need a bit of management to stay pure.
Easy — start here
- Tomatoes, beans, peas, lettuce — self-pollinating, so varieties stay pure without isolation. Save and go.
Intermediate
- Peppers — mostly self-pollinating but bees cross them occasionally; separate varieties by ~50 feet or bag the flowers.
- Cucumbers, squash, melons — insect-pollinated and promiscuous. Different varieties need ~½ mile isolation, or hand-pollinate a few marked flowers under row cover.
Advanced
- Carrots, beets, onions, brassicas — biennials. They only make seed in year two, after surviving winter (or being dug and replanted in spring).
Processing dry seed (beans, peas, lettuce, flowers)
Dry-seeded crops are the simplest:
- Let pods or seed heads dry on the plant until they rattle — beans turn brown and papery, lettuce sends up fluffy heads.
- Pull whole plants on a dry day and finish drying under cover for 1–2 weeks.
- Thresh: crush pods/heads in a bag or bucket, then winnow — pour between containers in a breeze (or in front of a fan) so chaff blows away and seed stays.
Processing wet seed (tomatoes, cucumbers)
Wet-seeded crops have a germination-inhibiting gel around each seed that fermentation removes:
- Pick fully ripe fruit — for cucumbers, overripe: yellow-orange and soft, well past eating stage.
- Scoop seeds and gel into a jar with a little water. Loosely cover.
- Ferment 2–3 days at room temperature. A film of mold on top is normal and expected.
- Add water, stir, and pour off the floating pulp and hollow seeds — good seeds sink.
- Rinse in a fine strainer, then spread on a screen or ceramic plate (not paper — it sticks) to dry 1–2 weeks.
Drying and storage
- Dry thoroughly. A seed is dry enough when it snaps rather than bends. Rush this and mold wins.
- Store cool, dark, and dry. Paper envelopes inside an airtight jar in a cool closet work great. Rule of thumb: temperature (°F) + humidity (%) should sum to under 100.
- Label everything. Variety, year, and notes. “Yellow tomato 2024” feels obvious now; in 2027 it won’t.
- Freezer option: fully dried seed in airtight jars keeps 5–10+ years frozen. Let the jar reach room temp before opening so condensation doesn’t hit the seed.

When in doubt, do a germination test: 10 seeds on a damp paper towel in a bag, kept warm. If 7 sprout, sow at normal density. If 4 sprout, sow thick. If none sprout — time for fresh seed.
